The Wedding that Became a Funeral

- KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN: This is Esmatullah. He was shot by U.S. troops in the Chonai area of Kandahar, as he drove off a side street and onto the main road. Esmatullah’s aunt, his sister, and his niece were also killed. His mother was injured but she survived. Esmatullah was supposed to get married the next day and he was on his way to visit relatives and make last minute arrangements for the ceremony. These pictures were taken on September 19, 2009, in the cemetery where Esmatullah was buried. The funeral took place on the same day the wedding was supposed to take place.
